I am a regular mum. You may have even passed me in the supermarket aisle (possibly yelling at my kids as they ask me for a bottle of Prime for the thousandth time that day). I am educated, have a fun social life, a great husband, a supportive family, great health, and have enough money to not have to stress too much about paying the bills. I did well at school, went to uni, found employment, and worked my way up the ranks. I became a television producer. I produced live television - the most exciting kind IMO. I had tv personalities on speed dial, got to be in exclusive situations and meet exclusive people, and it was fun. I felt like I was doing pretty well in life. I had it all.
Problem was, something didn't feel quite right inside. I was missing family moments, taking days to respond to messages from friends, and was often sick. I also missed school dress up day once. That was catastrophic. And I always felt guilty. Guilty for being at home when I should have been at work, guilty for being at work when I should have been at home. As a result, I was constantly trying to please everyone, do everything, and be there for everyone - as my way of showing that I cared and that everything was great. Except it wasn't. And I wasn't.
Fast forward a few years, and through my own coaching journey I have now recognised a few things:
1 - I was on a hamster wheel. Life's hamster wheel. It's very easy to get on. Others have fought for women's rights to be able to do everything, so we should do everything! Only problem is - doing everything leaves you exhausted!
2 - I was not living my life in line with my values. Heck - I didn't even know what my values were! Who has time for values?!
3 - It's not normal to constantly feel tired, stressed, have headaches and sleep badly. In fact, those were signs telling me everything wasn't ok.
Through coaching, I was able to slow down, discover my values, and work out what’s important to me and how I want to spend my time on this Earth. (Write your eulogy - I dare you! It whips you into action like nothing else!) Don’t get me wrong, I still have my down-moments (and my kids still ask me for Prime a million times a day), but now as a qualified Mental Fitness Coach in the areas of Health & Wellness, I get to live my life with purpose, have the skills to navigate my wellbeing, and I also get to help others do the same. This brings me SO. MUCH. JOY.
I hope I haven’t painted a picture of me now being a perfect mother, friend and wife. I’m still far from that! My kids still whinge and fight, I still take a few days to respond to friends messages, and I still forget if I have a few too many wines I AM going to be hungover... But I’m far more at peace with where I’m at and the conscious decisions I make in my life. Life is good.
